EVALUATION OF THINKING STYLES AND VALUES

In my own personal transformation efforts, and in my projects with people I work with, I believe in a measure-based approach.

I like to see to where I/we start and where I/we intend to arrive.

And for the assessment of the dominant thinking styles, I have started to use the Circumplex tool for a while.

The Circumplex is a psychometric model used to evaluate dominant thinking, behavior, and interaction styles at individual, team or organization level.

The Circumplex is part of a wider methodology of personal or organizational transformation invented by Human Synergistics.

 THE 4 MOTIVATIONAL POLES

  •  N: Orientation towards Satisfaction (to build / „to be better”)
  •  S: Orientation towards Security (to appear / „not to be worse”)
  • V: Orientation towards Tasks  (I’m concerned about „things to do”)
  • E: Orientation towards People (I’m concerned about relationships with others)

TRHEE MAIN CATEGORIES OF THINKING STYLES

Constructive Styles: anchored in Satisfaction, constructive styles are about the general concern to „be better” / to build, both in relation to the Tasks, and with People.

Passive-Defensive Styles : anchored especially in Security, passive-defensive styles are about concern to maintain safety by interacting with People.

Aggressive-Defensive Styles : anchored especially in Security, aggressive-defensive styles are about the concern to feel safe by the way of approaching Tasks.

 12 SPECIFIC THINKING STYLES

 Constructive styles

  • Hour 11 – Achievement
  • Hour 12 – Self-actualizing
  • Hour 1 – Humanistic – Encouraging
  • Hour 2 – Affiliative

 Passive-defensive styles

  • Hour 3 – Approval
  • Hour 4 – Conventional
  • Hour 5 – Dependent
  • Hour 6 – Avoidance

 Aggressive-Defensive styles

  • Hour 7 – Oppositional
  • Hour 8 – Power
  • Hour 9 – Competitive
  • Hour 10 – Perfectionistic

PSYCHOLOGICAL NEED ABOUT EACH STYLE (Simplified)

Before continuing, I invite you to notice that the ratio between Constructive and Defensive styles is 4 to 8, and this is also based on a neuroscientific reality: our mind has evolved to focus on the negative, or otherwise the security needs overcome the needs for Satisfaction.

Now, I’d like to invite you to a metaphor that helped me better understand how we think:

OUR MINDS, AS A STREAM OF PSYCHIC ENERGY

Imagine that a stream of psychic energy or thought flows through our heads (simplifying it, you can look at it as if it were your mind).

And as long as it flows, this river digs and strengthens new ditches through the surface on which it leans (simplifying, you can look at it as the brain).

Thus, the more we focus our attention on certain things, the more we reinforce those neural motorways / patterns of thinking.

Now, the really interesting part is that we cannot stop this river (as a test, try not to think of anything). It flows constantly. All we can do is direct it to different water wires.

That is, to consciously choose what we want to focus on, understanding that this will generate new patterns of dominant thinking over time.

The Circumplex measures „how much water (psychic energy) flows on each thread (the 12 styles of thinking)”.

 EXAMPLE: DOMINANT DEFENSIVE PROFILE

I invite you to discover a concrete example of evaluation and transformation regarding the Circumplex tool in the case study „Choose your words well …” and Neuroscience of Communication.

If you are interested in a process of evaluating and transforming thinking patterns and values, at a personal, group or organization level, I invite you to write me.
